Before Lumos Eyecare, I worked in employed positions for six years. I kept moving every year or two, and while I liked parts of each job, something just wasn’t right. I found myself searching for a version of optometry that aligned with how I wanted to practice. Eventually, I realized what I needed “I wanted a white canvas.”
I opened my own practice, Lumos Eyecare, in a Costco. When I opened Lumos Eyecare, my mission was to deliver high-technology, highly accessible care, no shortcuts, and to lead with positivity.
Myopia management was central to Lumos Eyecare from the beginning. We approached it as “Let’s actually slow this progression”, not “We’ll keep an eye on it”.
I invested in biometry early. We offered specialty lenses. We added ortho-k. We developed a program utilizing the latest technology, and I quickly discovered that fine-tuning the conversation with parents was going to be the next piece of the puzzle.
Explaining axial length, progression risk, and treatment response in a short exam window – and doing that confidently across clinicians – is key to increasing treatment uptake.
When I first saw mEYE® Suite, my reaction was immediate: “Why didn’t I think of this?” I began using it in consults right away, but I first studied the reports myself to understand exactly how I wanted to present them.
Features like the percentile charts and the Vision Simulator changed the tone of conversations entirely. What stood out was that years of research were distilled into something usable. Now, instead of over-explaining refractive error and diopters, I show them easy-to-understand visuals. “It felt like having a third person in the room, the data was just there.”
Parents who don’t wear glasses suddenly understand. Parents who do say, “Oh wow… I don’t want them to see the way I do.” That moment matters.
Initially, some associate doctors were hesitant to start with myopia. They were worried about how time-consuming and difficult the conversions would be. When we introduced mEYE® Suite, “They opened it and said, ‘Oh my gosh, I don’t have to do anything.’”
Once they saw that the platform eliminated the need to create custom PDFs, scripts, or educational materials, buy-in followed quickly. Now every child receives a personalized mEYE® Guide report.
Technicians collect axial length and autorefraction and put them into mEYE® Guide. The doctor reviews the report before walking in. We use it live during the consult – almost like a visual guide.
This process is now standard across both our locations. mEYE® Suite didn’t overhaul our workflow; it makes sure we get the most out of it by making our recommendations land.
When we first sit down with parents, we use mEYE® Guide to frame the entire conversation. The predicted prescription graphs and visual simulations help parents see where their child is headed if we do nothing. Instead of me over-explaining diopters and risk percentages, I show them.
Parents can see projected progression. I send the report so they can review it at home or share it with a spouse or partner. It gives them something concrete to reference. They can see what higher levels of myopia look like. It shifts the conversation from “Do we really need this?” to “What can we do?”. That visual foundation makes it much easier for families to commit to treatment. Where it really becomes powerful, though, is at follow-up.
I had a young patient, he is an easygoing child who never complains, even when he is a -4. We began using mEYE® Score consistently at every three-month visit. His prescription had increased, but when we looked at the axial length data, the change was not as dramatic as the refractive shift suggested. That gave us a level of reassurance. It showed that treatment was doing something and that reassurance is so important for both the parents and the clinician.
When parents see 49 percent or 50 percent control, their first instinct is to think we failed. They are used to thinking in terms of 100 percent being the goal. I explain that 50 percent control is actually what we expect. That is progression we prevented. If he went up 0.75 diopters, that likely means he would have progressed 1.50 diopters without intervention.
That reframing matters because it allows us to separate emotion from data. Instead of panic, the conversation becomes, “Okay, something is responding. Let’s keep going.” It keeps them engaged. Parents leave understanding two things: treatment is working, and monitoring is essential. And that is what keeps them coming back.
I am only physically present in my primary location a few hours each week. For myopia management to truly grow, it had to function without me in the room. mEYE® Suite gave my associate doctors a framework they could rely on. The conversations became consistent. The messaging became clear. The confidence increased.
Now, when a child is appropriate for treatment, the conversation lands. Parents understand the why. We are no longer over-explaining. Education drives the decision, not pressure. And because of that, uptake is at 95%. It feels natural, not sales-driven.
When I opened my second location – a true cold start – I implemented mEYE® Suite from day one. The demographic there is very different from my primary office. The platform works equally well in both settings, because it is not about pushing a specific treatment. It is about showing data. Easy-to-follow visuals outperform complex explanations every time. That clarity builds trust quickly. And from a practice owner perspective, I have learned something important: the return on investment does not come from devices alone. It comes from education and confidence.
You can buy the most advanced equipment available, but if you cannot clearly communicate risk and response, families hesitate. mEYE® Suite bridges that gap. It gives structure to the conversation and defensibility to the recommendation.
If the platform were removed tomorrow, I would feel it immediately. Not because I cannot practice without it, but because I would lose the visual clarity that makes parents feel certain about their decision.
The results have been both measurable and emotional. There is less second-guessing. Fewer delayed decisions. More proactive action. And that consistency matters.
“If you’re hesitant, start by using it for yourself. Even if you never show it to a patient, you should understand what that data is telling you. At minimum, you should be using this for yourself.”
